About Merton College and Sixth Form Centre Our Mission The mission of Merton College is to provide opportunities for learning and personal and professional development and so make a difference to the communities we serve.

The College offers a wide range of courses which provide progression to employment, to more advanced education, or to enhanced career prospects for those already in work.

All you need to know about Merton College We teach a wide range of courses at different levels, to people from many different backgrounds and of all ages. For example, we offer courses from basic English and Return to Learn, through to programmes that will equip you for entry to University or give you advanced vocational skills.

Many of our students are aged 16-19 but we also have a substantial number of mature learners - last year our oldest student was 84! We have equal numbers of male and female students and a wide representation of ethnic backgrounds. Both students and our staff contribute to a rich culture and positive atmosphere at the College.

What our students have in common is the desire to learn and succeed. Whoever you are, we give you the opportunity to do this in a College environment that is welcoming, supportive and safe. All our full-time students have a personal tutor, for example, who will guide you through your time here. There is a range of services to support you while you are here, and students can drop in to our Advice Centre to find out anything related to their course and life at the College.

We are proud of our mix of students and the success they achieve. And people like to come here too - most students express a high level of satisfaction when they finish their course, and many go on to Higher Education or into a rewarding job.

Our new Centre of Vocational Excellence in Automotive Engineering ...in partnership with Kingston College, launches in Autumn 2005. Our Centre of Vocational Excellence in Health & Social Care, established in 2002, continues to thrive with new programmes for dental nurses, care managers and medical administrators.

We work with over 200 employers and provide bespoke training for 40 public and private sector companies. Clients include several hospitals, greenwich Leisure, Gatwick Airport, Age Concern, Pfizers, HSBC and the Royal Albert Hall, as well as many local SMEs.

The college is accredited by Investors in People.

We are also have the Approved Provider Standard from the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, the Matrix standard for advice and guidance, and were commended for 'Best Work-Life Balance' in the mother@work.co.uk awards.

KEY FACTS


- The college has a diverse population and a welcoming atmosphere.: 48% of our students are male and 52% female. Around 50% of students are from ethnic minorities. Our youngest student is 14 and oldest 80.

- Our A Level pass rate for 2005 was 93%: ..with 11 subjects reporting a 100% pass rate. 55% passed with high grades (A-C). Over 50% of our Level 3 students go on to university.

- £450,000 was spent supporting 700 learners: ...through out Learner Support Fund, helping with the costs of travel, books, childcare etc.

- Around 25% of our work is delivered in off-site centres: ...and workplaces with courses such as Access to Nursing, Food Hygiene, NVQs in Customer Service and Management and basic skills. We provide courses in various outreach centres, improving access to essential skills and family learning.

- Over 7,500 students enrolled, studying for a total of 12,500 qualifications

- 1,100 full-time students are under 19 and 800 are mature learners.

- The College has an on-site creche and supports two off-site nurseries.
