Tara Arts Theatre in Earlsfield to get exciting overhaul

A popular theatre in Earlsfield is set for an overhaul after a planning application was accepted last week.

The Tara Arts Theatre, in Garratt Lane, will have an entirely new frontage, which would see the theatre's historic brickwork façade restored and the building extended on all sides.

A distinctive motif, which wraps around the entire four storey side extension, will be added to the front to reflect the theatre company's fusion of Anglo-Asian arts.

It is inspired by the Banyan Tree - India's national tree and a traditional community meeting place where people gather in the shade of its canopy.

A new rehearsal space, an improved auditorium, modernised office and foyer will also be created plus a new staircase and lift.

The theatre was originally home to an acclaimed arts company which first brought Asian theatre to Britain in the 1970's.

The deteriorating building has been home to Tara Arts for over thirty years and is no longer fit for purpose.
