VIDEO: Musical classic, Fiddler on the Roof, comes to Sutton

As a Jewish father attempts to maintain his traditions the odds are against him in the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof, writes Sophia Sleigh.

The young performers of Spiral Youth Theatre are bringing the show, set in Russia in 1905, to Carshalton.

Tevye, the village dairyman, who is blessed with 5 daughters, sets about finding the oldest three a husband each. Life is traditional and the rules of the village govern their lives.

However, the girls decide that they can find their own husbands and look for love rather than a traditional match made for them. 

Tevye is forced to give in to his oldest daughters and his heart is finally broken when his third daughter not only runs away with a Russian Soldier but is married by the village priest and not the Rabbi. 

Things finally come to a head when the Russian soldiers tell the villagers they have three days to leave.

Director, Kate Puleston, says: "Although this musical has a fairly sad ending the delights of its score and the day to day humour of Tevye and his relationship with his wife Golde, his family and the village around him lift the story placing it in the greats of musical theatre. 

"Working with young people on such a project brings up interesting topics but shows that no matter what the time frame or the era of a piece the same issues arise around family life and progression. 

"It has been a delightful project to direct and the young members of Spiral have worked very hard to create a performance of a very high standard."
