Lenny Henry coming to Richmond Theatre

Following his triumphant performance as Othello in the West End, Lenny Henry takes on one of the 20th century’s most poignant and unforgettable characters, as he stars in August Wilson’s Fences at Richmond Theatre.

Henry’s character Troy Maxson was once a gifted athlete but was denied his chance at the big time by the policies of segregation, and now struggles through daily life in Pittsburgh.

Director Paulette Randall says working with Henry is a pleasure.

She says: “Lenny is amazing – he works so hard, it’s just a joy. I couldn’t ask for a better cast and they all work so well together.”

Resentful of a world he believes has denied him chances at every turn, Henry’s character takes out his anger on his sports-obsessed son and loyal wife.

Set between the Korean and Vietnam wars, Fences explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations.

Randall, who has directed five of August Wilson’s 10 plays, says she is a complete fan of his work.

She says: “This is the sixth one for me. I just love his work. He writes so eloquently and it’s funny and emotional and tells a cracking story.

“Anyone who likes a really good story that wants to come and have a really good time and go on an emotional journey, then we’ll take you.”
