Choir sings to conserve woodland Choir sings to conserve woodland

A community choir set up in the belief anyone who wants to sing can is performing a charity concert next week.

Soundbytes is singing at Christ Church URC, in Epsom Road, Leatherhead, on Friday, March 22, to support efforts to conserve ancient woodland in Leatherhead.

The choir, which rehearses at Ashtead Baptist Church, in Barnett Wood Lane, is performing to raise money for the Friends of Teazle Wood.

Hazel Hannam was inspired to set up the choir while watching an episode of TV show The Choir in which choirmaster Gareth Malone teaches schoolboys to sing.

Ms Hannam said: "I just thought gosh that’s amazing what a great sound you can get.

"I thought I might give that a go myself and see if anyone is interested in singing."

That was back in 2009 and since then the choir raised about £4,000 for charity.

At the charity concert Soundbytes, accompanied by Meredith White on the piano, will sing popular songs and old favourites by Joni Mitchell, Take That, the Beach Boys, Coldplay and the Beatles.
