Neighbour of historic Ewell pub in favour of it becoming a KFC

Steve Rousseau, of Ewell Bypass, believes the Organ and Dragon would benefit from the money to be invested in it by KFC Steve Rousseau, of Ewell Bypass, believes the Organ and Dragon would benefit from the money to be invested in it by KFC

A man who lives next to a historic pub has spoken out in favour of a controversial plan to turn it into a fast-food restaurant.

Steve Rousseau, a bus driver of Ewell Bypass, believes turning the Organ and Dragon in London Road, Ewell into a KFC will save the building which he said has become increasingly dilapidated since he moved there 12 years ago.

It was pub and Thai restaurant until it closed in July.

KFC has submitted a planning application to Epsom and Ewell Council to turn the site into a "restaurant and hot food takeaway, with associated improvements to the access and car parking areas" - a move which has prompted hundreds of people to sign a petition against the increased traffic, litter and anti-social behaviour they believe will follow.

But 57-year-old Mr Rousseau said: "I’m happier it will become a KFC.

"The pub was getting more and more run down and it wasn’t that popular.  From Monday to Thursday it was impossible to get people in there, it was only busier on Saturday nights.

"It’s a lovely building and they will keep it.

"In the long run it may become a drive-through.  But I don’t think it’s going to be that bad.

"The pub will be uplifted by the KFC, with the amount of money and investment they are bringing to it."

But Elaine Jury, of Elmwood Drive, said she has already collected 1,000 signatures opposing the KFC development.

She said: "The response to the campaign has been phenomenal.

"Ewell and Stoneleigh residents and anyone who has travelled through the crossroads and knows how bad they are has signed.

"We will be door-knocking to persuade residents to write to the council objecting to the application."

A number of residents have already submitted their complaints online.

Dalbir Bansal said: "This is absolutely diabolical.

"The locals do not need a KFC.  There will be increased litter and it will effect on our house prices."

Victoria Everest agreed: "This cannot be considered an appropriate or positive development.  I have significant concerns around the increased noise, pollution, litter, negative impact on house prices and further congestion on an already dangerously busy junction."

The Facebook page ‘Say yes to KFC at site of Organ and Dragon’ has received 338 ‘likes’ since August 30.

he'll soon get the hump with the smell of fried chicken, and just think about the vast amount of vermin it will attract to the area.

Not only will there be an influx of rats foxes seagulls and pigeons, just think of all those spotty tracksuit wearing lower class scum kids with there pulled down trousers and baseball caps that will pour off the local council estates that are going to loiter around doing there 'tags' and smoking weed till late at night.

Add to that thought fat chubby fingered greasy parents sitting in their clapped out old bangers screaming abuse at their toddlers from the comfort of their clamped out old ford escorts whilst the stuff their faces whilst blaring scooters greatest hits from the stereo.

Bet he can't wait!!!!

Honestly I cant wait to see how long before he complains of the noise and smell.....oh and I almost forgot to mention the deliveries and the litter!!!

Get a grip Cynical Me!...nobody ever said re-devolpment of the Organ and Dragon would be easy and pain free.

Honestly, you people should have better things to do than constantly whinge and moan about the re-development of the pub and "lower class scum".

Get a grip and a life!

With the problems it is going to cause with litter, rats, noise from deliveries and customers alike I have a right to moan.

Plus the probably de valuation of local properties.

Still I expect you will be uplifting your caravan to live in the car park.

As a member of Ewell's aimless-but-educated youth population of the late 60's, I would say that the Organ was never much of a draw but the Spring and - later on - the Wheatsheaf were more to my liking. I would probably agree with Mr Rousseau if I were still there. KFC - with all its faults, probably represents the best chance of keeping the building going.
What's the alternative? Retail? Residential? Maybe the building could be converted into posh flats or, more likely, demolished and replaced with some kind of 'social housing project'. Then, instead of merely attracting the less affluent types they would be living among you.
For a short time, when I was a kid in the 50's there were 3 fish and chip shops within walking distance of my house on Ewell Park Way. One of them was on Castle Parade but it was the first to close. How is that any worse than KFC? Maybe the Organ could become a pizza restaurant. I have in mind an ice cream and burger joint that struggled for years but has just recently exploded back to life as an upmarket pizza restaurant and bar.

Expatasb we the residents would have no problem with an upmarket pizza restaurant or a proper restaurant where you sit down with a knife and fork and plate and maybe have a glass of wine. Somewhere you spend sometime over a meal with family or friends. It is a fast food restaurant with a takeaway we object to. By the very nature of their business the volume of cars going in and out on a very busy road is just an accident waiting to happen. The road is already working to full capacity and can not take the extra volume of cars a fast food takeaway would attract. Fast food is best kept in town centres where there is plenty of foot traffic. Very few people walk past this site so nearly all customers would be driving there.

Cynical me says - can't help but be astounded by your in depth knowledge regarding take away restaurants and the clients that you believe they attract.Any restaurant has the potential to produce odour - it was a restaurant previously so where's the difference? Maybe we should campaign to shut the Honda dealer opposite as I assume that marque lacks the prestige that you feel the area deserves? Actually why not close all the local businesses that provide employment and support the economy so that you can reside in your self contained bubble devoid of any contact with the real world - as previously said "Get a life"
