Education - City of Leicester Grammar School, Corpus Christi College Oxford, University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Previous Occupation - Research Assistant in Politics at Leicester University (1966-68), Belgium Government Scholar in Brussels (1968-69), Lecturer Strathclyde University (1969-73), Labour Party International Research Officer (1974-76), Political Liaison Officer for the National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers (1976-92). RMT Member.

Personal Overview - Tends to the mainstream in the Labour Party, and is likely to be fairly positive towards European matters. He has strong links with the Railway sector, and in particular the RMT Union, he is known to have strongly opposed the privatisation of the Railway system. He has been a member of several special interest groups including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform. He is also a member of Amnesty International, indicating that he is probably fairly liberal on most social issues.
