Streatham is getting a £10,000 boost to revitalise the high road, the Government announced on Tuesday.

Hundreds of towns across the country have signed up to be Town Team Partners and will benefit from support.

The announcement comes after Streatham High Road failed in its bid for £100,000 as part of a pilot  scheme fronted by retail expert Mary Portas.

Lee Alley, chairman of the Streatham Business Board, said the money would go towards smartening up the street through initiatives such as painting shop shutters.

Mr Alley: "We thought we were out of the running but it’s great news to hear we got ten grand.

"It’s a superb boost to what we are doing on the high road."

Local Growth Minister Mark Prisk said more than 300 town centres would get support to breathe new life into their high streets.

Mr Prisk said: "There's a real hunger in town centres across the country for them to be revitalised and remain attractive places to visit."
