A woman is believed to have gone into a coma after her taxi was involved in a high-speed crash in the early hours of Sunday.

Streatham Road, Mitcham, was closed off in both directions at about 1.30am on Sunday, November 11, after there was a crash involving the taxi and another car.

A woman in her early 50s, named locally as Antoinette, was airlifted to St George’s Hospital, Tooting, after suffering from a bleed to the brain. It is believed she fell into a coma but awoke on Tuesday.

The wife and mother-of-two was on her way home to Streatham after visiting the Poppy Club, in St Mark’s Road, Mitcham, where she is described as a “very popular visitor”.

A telephone operator at Furzedown Cars, based in Streatham, confirmed one of their evening drivers had been involved in the accident but was released from hospital the following day after suffering minor injuries.

He said: “He was a bit shaken up but was ok in the end. The car was badly damaged and probably it’s going to be written off.”

A London Ambulance spokesman said: "Our staff treated: a 29-year-old man complaining of back pain and took the patient as a priority to St George's Hospital, Tooting.

"A 41-year-old man for a head injury was taken to the major trauma centre at King's College Hospital as a priority.

"And a woman was treated for a head injury and taken as a priority to St George's Hospital, Tooting."
