Streatham Liberal Democrats have selected Amna Ahmad as Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary candidate for the Streatham constituency.

She was chosen in a ballot of Liberal Democrat members.

Amna grew up in the area, spending some time in foster care before winning an assisted place at James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich and later graduating from Oxford University.

She was born in Pakistan and speaks fluent Urdu.

She lives on Brixton Hill, and enjoys arranging music nights and contributing to local publications. In summer 2013, she ran as Liberal Democrat candidate in the Tulse Hill by-election and campaigned successfully for local parking problems to be resolved.

Amna works with charities and businesses to help them campaign. She has recently worked on projects to encourage children to be more physically active and healthy and to increase public awareness of local health services.

Ashley Lumsden, Liberal Democrat Lambeth Council Group Leader said: “I am delighted that our members have selected Amna as our Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC).

"She is known to residents from when she ran in the Tulse Hill council by-election. I know she will work really hard in the constituency, making sure residents' voices are heard and standing up for Liberal Democrat values.”

A delighted Amna Ahmad said: “I grew up in South London, I live in the area and I am a passionate campaigner on local issues. I have a first-hand understanding of the issues affecting our area – including housing, transport and the economy – because they are the same issues which have affected me and my family over the years.

“On all these counts, Liberal Democrats are making a difference in government. We are building more affordable housing than Labour ever did. We fought successfully to retain local Thameslink services from Streatham and Tulse Hill. And even in tough times, Liberal Democrats have delivered fairer taxes. The lowest earners have been lifted out of tax altogether and the very wealthiest are paying five times more than under Labour. “

"Streatham residents have told me that they feel let-down by Lambeth Labour. They see a Council that’s spending £50m on a new town hall while complaining about cuts, and a Labour Party in Westminster that just won’t face up to the economic mess they left behind.

"Local people deserve a local MP who will really work to build a stronger economy and a fairer society. As your candidate I will do just that.”
