Thameslink and Southern train services need 'urgent improvement', says Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake

An MP has demanded two south London train operators improve their "maddening" service.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has pushed train operators to improve after a Which? magazine survey showed out of the country's 20 rail operators, Southern and First Capital Connect are ranked 13th and 18th respectively.

They both only scored two out of five in terms of punctuality and First Capital Connect only scored two out of five for reliability.

Mr Brake said: "As more and more people like me decide to leave their cars at home and take the train to work, it becomes essential that train companies justify that commuter decision.

"Commuters are being let down greatly, in more ways than one, by the major train companies that serve Sutton. Urgent improvements must be made."

Which? also looked at ticket machines and branded some of them a "maddening waste of time".

Mr Brake added: "It is worrying that decisions are being made to replace staff in ticket offices with ticket machines.

"Like many others, I have often found myself left frustrated by inflexible or confusing ticket machines or greeted by an ‘out of order’ sign."

I commute to London Bridge from Wallington three days a week. It is very unusual if I DON'T have a problem with either my journey up to or back from London.

Since October I have only managed to get a seat twice on the way up, but on the way home I've always sat down. Last week my train was 25 minutes late arriving at London, and although this length of delay is rare, my train has only ever been on time twice. However, when leaving London Bridge in the evening, most days the train leaves early!!!

The service has now got so bad that from next week I'm going to start cycling to London and save myself nearly £30 a week, and I'll arrive at the office quicker, as I have a 20 minute walk to Wallington Station and another 20 minute walk at the other end.

Sorry Southern, you have just lost a customer.

How many times has Tom Brake repeated this, nothing changes, so, the next step, tough stance is needed and issue proceedings to take franchise away, the service is appaling and provisions for delays is rare, I the other day needed to go to London for an appointment, granted this was South west trains but the problem is the same with them all, signall problem at Vauxhall, no trains leaving waterloo/clapham, train delayed by 42 minutes, no info, no back up plans made and over 2 hours late to appointment, joe public is over the barrel by these greedy so and so's, larger accountablity is whats required, not more surveys, we know we can't get a seat, we know it's unreliable, we know the trains are dated and a state(yes i know new ones on Southern) what we don't know is when will someone grow a pair and get the companies and national rail together and say, this is your fine, we are taking control of it.
