Sutton Council has been accused of surrendering to a German invasion of market traders who are due to take over a plot wanted by a home guard of stallholders.
Evelyn Baum, 69, and her 70-year-old husband Harry have run a jewellery stall in Sutton market for 25 years. They said they were shocked to discover a crack unit of overseas sellers appear suddenly in the town centre. Never in the field of market traders did an event cause so much upset to so many.
“We fought twice to prevent being invaded and now we have been invaded by invitation.”
Councillor David Pickles, UKIP councillor for Belmont
"We have asked repeatedly for the spot," a dejected Mrs Baum said, "but have been told we can't trade up there on grounds of health and safety. It just seems so unfair, we are out there 52 weeks a year in all weathers.
"It has nothing to do with race, it has to do with why they have been allowed the spot when we were refused. It seems the rules have changed.
"The German market is quite welcome, it livens up the place but we don't understand why it wasn't put down the other end. The move has caused a lot of bad feeling."
Disgruntled traders said they were angered because their German counterparts will enjoy prime position in the town centre until December 22, taking over the busiest trading period of the year.
Councillor David Pickles, UKIP councillor for Belmont, is vowing to fight the move in the High Street and in the council chamber.
He branded the move "disgraceful" and said: "Our traders who are there day in day out all year round are being denied the choice by the council of being in what they consider a prime location at the busiest time of the year.
"What they could earn during December would keep them going during the lean months of January and February, and yet in its wisdom, this council sees fit to offer the best pitches to a European market. No wonder the market traders are seething.
"We fought twice to prevent being invaded and now we have been invaded by invitation."
A spokesman for the council said the decision to host markets and events was part of the town centre management's ambition to liven up the High Street.
He said: "The events and markets promoted at this site make a positive contribution to the local economy because they increase visitors to the High Street and boosts trade, and also gives shoppers more choice.
"Sutton is only one of very few London boroughs with a German market, which enhances our competitiveness as a visitor destination."
The German Market runs from today until Saturday, December 22, and sells everything from Bavarian beers to meats and hand-crafted gifts.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 600 employees and has the following statistics? 29 have been accused of spouse abuse 7 have been arrested for fraud 19 have been accused of writing bad cheques 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses 3 have done time for assault 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit 4 have been arrested on drug-related charges 8 have been arrested for shoplifting 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits 84 have been arrested for drink driving in the last year Which organization is this? It's the 635 members of the House of Commons, the same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line. So why believe any politician?

Well I must say, I am quite pleased that this story has stirred the local imagination. However, I'm not surprised that Cllr Tim Crowley is attempting to be King Canute and smear me with all sorts of hypocratic nonsense, when he, as a junior member of the council, has done nothing to assist the market traders, nor has the political nous to. For his information, and those who have "had a go" here, the facts are this. Last Tuesday, I was contacted by the market traders (who probably wanted a councillor who could actually do something as opposed to those who mouth off and achieve nothing). I suggested to them that the quickest way to highlight their situation would be publicity in the press. They agreed. I contacted Heather Darlington - who incidentally is one of the best reporters the Guardian has had in recent times - and she took my quotes. The throwaway line about being "invaded" was jocular, but of course the lefty-liberals (and Cllr Crowley who appears to be a mouthpiece for the new Scully Tories) fell for it hook line and sinker. The important point here is that these are OUR local traders, and they have been trampled on. I have written a letter to the Guardian this week outlining the way forward on this. Cllr Crowley with his infantile attempts to make the local Tories look electable would do well to learn from this. What have the Tories or the Lib-Dems ever done to stand up for our people? The answer is precisely nothing. Perhaps the Tories are getting a trifle concerned at the publicity one of their ex's is getting. Coming back down to earth the important people here are the market traders. They asked me to represent them, and represent them I will.

Cllr Pickles could have made this case without the crude reference to the World Wars just because this market is selling German goods.
Would he be such a crusader if they were seeling traditional Olde English wares?
He's betraying his poorly hidden xenophobia here.

King Canute's wisdom was so great that it has stretched across many centuries will this 'Pickle' be known much beyond his 15 minutes of fame or at best the ledgend he becomes in his own lunchtime being one of 5 EUkip councillors out of the 19,500 councillors in Britain. Forefend dear sir but it was the good King who to make fools of his sychophants and toadies who ordered his throne to the foreshore to PROVE he could not hold back the tide and was not as omnipotent as the toadies claimed for self aggrandisement. Perhaps a lesson that might keep the council out of the Pickle in the future as they will have to be far more adroit and show greater wisdom if they wish to keep our age old continental neighbours at bay! I thoroughly enjoy reading Cllr Pickles regular comments and letters and would agree whole heartedly with his views. It would appear that his latest comments have sparked a little controversy to say the least. Come on all of you, where's your sense of humour, if you can't see the tongue in cheek comments that he made regarding the "invasion" in this piece, you've lost it. Keep em rolling Cllr, I for one wish there were a few more like you! As for Cllr Crowley, Cllr Pickles pointed out that you are a junior member of the council - If you keep making what appears to be personal attacks the way you are, junior is probably what you will remain - voters don't like personal attacks! I bet you wish you had the ability for self publicity that Cllr Pickles has.
