Snow lovers have been making the most of the wintery weather, with hundreds of residents flocking to Tooting Bec Common to play in the snow.

Teacher Dan Westland, 27, who works at Southmead Primary School in Southfields, got a call at 6am to tell him the school would be closing, so decided to spend the day enjoying the snow.

He said: "I think with all the worry at the moment about the recession this weather could cheer everyone up a bit.

"If you look around everyone is having a really good time, and forgetting about everything else that is going on."

"Everything is at a standstill but maybe for a day thats not such a bad thing."

Business at the Tooting Bec Common Cafe was certainly not frozen, as people flocked to buy hot drinks and food to warm up.

Manager Vittorio Della Comeria said: "This has been the busiest day of the year so far. Weather like this is great for business as everyone comes to warm up a bit after playing in the snow. We have already sold out of hot chocolate."

Some people were enjoying snow for the first time. Streatham resident Julie Latham, 28, from Australia, said: "This is the first time I have ever seen snow like this, I love it."

Kat Bee, 24, who works for a televison production company in central London had tried to get to work, but had to turn back as public transport was not running.

"I did my best to try and get in but with no buses or Tubes it was impossible," she said.

"I will be working from home later, but for now i'm going to enjoy the snow. Its not like we get to do this very often."
