Big-brother style spy cameras are to be used by Lambeth Council to “gather intelligence” on people committing antisocial behaviour.
The council intends to spend £33,000 on two redeployable cameras that can be installed and trained to gather evidence on problem areas.
The pilot project, which will be up and running by June, will see cameras placed on lamposts and pictures transmitted back to the borough’s CCTV control room.
The plans, contained within the council’s CCTV development plan, are to “inform neighbourhood anti-social behaviour problem solving,” according to a report to be studied by the council’s cabinet on Monday.
A decision on whether the pilot has been successful and should be expanded will be made in December.
According to the report, the new strategy is part of an overall plan “to develop a CCTV solution in Lambeth that is seen to respond to public request for support when needed, assists in gathering evidence to assess the scale and nature of problems and inform the development of community safety solutions in specific areas that are effective and reassure local people.”
