Jaws not Jesus: Crystal Palace cinema campaigners continue fight against church

“Jaws not Jesus” was the message coming from scores of protestors hoping a beloved bingo hall will be converted into a cinema, not a church.

More than 100 protestors appeared outside the Gala Bingo on Saturday for the second consecutive weekend to show their support for a silver screen coming to Crystal Palace.

They had pinned their hopes on the bingo hall -and former cinema - in Church Road as such a venue after interest in the building was expressed by a major independent cinema chain.

But it has instead been sold to evangelical church Kingsway International Christian Centre.

The church is also rumoured to have snapped up the former Mercedes showroom - another former cinema - next door.

Campaigners and local traders say the site is of “vital importance” to the economic regeneration of the area.

Andy Stern, who owns vintage shop Bambinos in Church Road, said: “It is the key building in the triangle that can be the springboard to unlock the potential of Crystal Palace.”

Cinema campaigner and vice chair of the Crystal Palace Chamber of Commerce, Sue Nagle, said: “We are not anti-church in any way.

"This campaign is about keeping a building in community use.”

While a cinema would be widely used by local residents, she added, a church would instead draw the majority of its visitors from outside Crystal Palace, who would take away parking spaces frown shoppers.

Ms Nagle also questioned demand for another church, when five churches in a half mile radius around the triangle were “half empty”.

The Kingsway International Christian Centre was contacted to comment on residents’ concerns, but said it would not comment before the sale had been officially completed on June 30.

Campaigners intend to challenge any planning applications made by the church to convert its multiple community leisure use to single purpose usage.

A spokesman for Bromley Council said it had a planning policy that sought to protect leisure uses where appropriate, but each planning application was judged on its individual merits and circumstances.

The closure of the art deco bingo hall is considered a big loss by the community, especially the elderly who saw it as their social crutch, according to residents.

Disappointed staff were also only informed of the closure on June 15, six days before it shut for good on Sunday night.

A spokeswoman from the Gala Coral group said the 11 staff affected by the closure were told as soon as possible by management.

She said the company was looking for alternative roles for the staff in the company.

The more support we get the more likely that any planning application will be refused.

Let's hope that common sense will prevail - why do we want another church? I understand that KICC brings in 8k worshippers every sunday - where oh where oh where are they all going to Park? NO NO NO this isnt what the area needs it needs to be uplifted economically not spiritually by another money making quasi religious outfit.

This is a purpose-built cinema with fine art deco architectural features. If there is any chance of it being restored as a cinema it will be a great asset to Upper Norwood

A cinema would be a great asset for Crystal Palace. A church would do nothing for the triangle except blocking Church Road off even more than it is already. An outrage if Bromley would allow the change of usage from community space to ch

Crystal Palace is a vibrant and friendly area with excellent bars and restaurants for the cinema's customers to visit before and after their movie treat. Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo needs a much larger venue than this to spread his words.

Err, pardon me - this smacks a tad of 'racism' here ? Every man and his three-legged dog... knows that a large number of our wonderful black British residents attend these Evangelical Churches to worship, sing, and dance - the singing, clapping, and dancing, is truely wonderful and should be embraced by the locals - we should really be supporting this group at Crystal Palace... and the parking issue is a very small issue to be concerned about - I suggest 'racism' is lurking just below the surface of these complainers - let the protestors prove they are not racist by allowing this Church to go ahead!!

I am deeply concerned by the lack of consultation with the local community over the sale and change of use of this historic building.

Ah bless 'the Scoffer' for trying to wind up us pro-cinema folk.... I very much doubt there is even the slightest hint of racism either on the surface, or 'lurking just below' as you put it. The bottom-line is that the majority of locals would just prefer a new cinema to another church. Thats it. Think its a bit of stretch to imply racism is at the bottom of it. At the end of the day, a cinema is for the many, a church is for the few...

I agree with TMR there is no racism or anti-religious feeling going on- The reality is that we already have five churches in the area, including an evangelist one, so why do we need a 6th when a cinema chain is interested in the site and would bring sustainable redevelopment to the area? A 6th church would bring no such benefit, and given its size the local infrastructure would be totally unable to cope. Why recategorise a building that has been set aside for D2 use (cinema or Bingo) and change it into a D1 under such circunstances?

The comment "another money making quasi religious outfit." is not helpful and scurillous. The issue is about what is in the benefit of the local community and trades people, and this what the council needs to consider before approving change of use. And the parking is an issue. Let's hope Bromley see sense and deny the change of use.

KICC is a community friendly church and has been so for the past 13 years since it established branches south of the River Thames. They have been helpful in dealing with issues that plague our communities and will be bringing valuable contributions to crystal palace. I have known them for sometime now. They are not a quasi money-making religious outfit. They have professionals who contribute immmensely to the society. Their presence in Crystal palace is to be welcome

Re: "theScoffer"

Your comments make the assumption that no black residents want a cinema in Crystal Palace. In fact, both the online and paper petitions have been signed by many different people who all share a common interest - they would simply prefer a cinema to a church at this particular site.

Kind regards,
MrLee

As a BNP activist I'd have thought you'd understand the concept of racism a lot better than you appear to. Not one reference to race apart from yours ... not one objection to the Church on the grounds of who's likely to use it ... fact is most people don't need to prove they're not racist because most people aren't ignorant fools like yourself

Good luck with the Cinema - knowing the area well I think it's a good idea and will be much appreciated by the WHOLE community

This is the best news and the best thing that can happen to Crystal Palace and its neighbourhood.

I have known this church for well over a decade and wherever they have been established, they have been known to create job opportunities and they work together with the local community to solve snti-social and rehabilitation issues, I am so excited to see them here.

I think this is an excellent development and will immensely benefit Crystal Palace. KICC is a wonderful church which is committed to building the community. I think we should embrace this forward looking organisation and celebrate the transformation of Church Street triangle.

femititi, the local community are making it very clear that the KICC plans for Church Road are not in line with what the community wants. The KICC is simply using its substantial wealth to buy up multiple properties and will force local traders out of business and severely impact the quality of life of local residents. We have been trying to get a cinema group interested in the site for some time only for the KICC to come along and out bid them.

KICC deserves to be given a chance. Yes, they are a church but one that is keen on developing and adding value to the local community. I believe this is good for Crystal Palace and the benefits will soon be seen!!
