The Brixton Pound – the first local currency to be launched in a UK city - was launched last Thursday, with some 40,000 notes going into circulation and being snapped up within days.

Tim Nichols, the Brixton Pound project manager, said supplies were already running out because so many people wanted the notes featuring the faces of famous Brixtonians.

He said while many people were snapping them up as souvenirs, there had been a number of transactions taking place using them.

Business in Streatham, West Norwood and Tulse Hill have been invited to participate in the scheme - intended to boost the local economy by keeping money circulating within the area.
