Streatham Ice Rink could close within weeks

Streatham's iconic 78-year-old ice rink could close within weeks with no timescale of when a new facility could open.

The shock revelation that the area could lose one of its most significant leisure facilities followed a crisis meeting between residents and developers over the future of the Streatham Hub development - already at least three years behind schedule.

A slump in the housing market caused by the recession has derailed the development - which includes some 250 new homes, a major Tesco supermarket, a 438 space car park, a bus interchange, and a state-of-the-art swimming pool and ice rink complex.

New plans on a revised scheme are to be drawn up within the next eight weeks.

But as dozens of concerned residents at the meeting demanded reassurances from Tesco and Lambeth Council the development was safe, Tesco backtracked on one of its original promises not to close the existing ice rink before a new one was built.

It also emerged a legal agreement between Tesco and the council guaranteeing "continuity of ice" had not been signed which means Tesco, which has leased the running of the rink to a private company, would be free to close it at any point.

This also means Streatham leisure centre - being run by the council but suffering from a similar deterioration of its facilities - could be forced to shut before the new facilities are built.

Residents reacted angrily to the revelations - and the suggestion the development could not be built during the recession.

Trevor Hutton, from ice rink campaign group Skaters 4 the Hub, said: "The situation for the ice rink is precarious. The building is crumbling and the minimum investment is being made in its upkeep.

"Health and Safety inspectors could come in at any minute and close it, and a new ice rink is nowhere near being built."

He said while Tesco was currently keeping the rink open, any major work needed could mean it is closed.

Resident Martin Godfrey said he did not accept the recession as an excuse for not building the project. He said an "unprecedented interest among constructors" to build the project meant building costs could be cut.

Many estate agents have also said the Streatham housing market is now booming.

Eoin Dardis, a Tesco spokesman for the project, said the recession had caused "big problems" and it was necessary to look again at "how the project could be delivered".

While he promised the "final product" would be the same - he could not confirm the same "delivery programme" nor the "continuity of ice".

Many people close to the project now believe Tesco will look to first build its store and the homes, which will finance the project.

The orginal building schedule stipulated construction work on other parts of the project could not begin until the new leisure facilities were standing.

Critics accused the council of being "held over a barrel" by Tesco in negotiations.

Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Chris Nicholson said: "If there is any suggestion of the ice rink closing, even for a short time, it would be a massive betrayal by Labour of their promises to the people of Streatham."

Labour candidate Chuka Umunna said "the continuity of our ice rink provision" was "fundamental to this community".

Lambeth's cabinet member for regeneration, Coun Lib Peck, said the council was still in a "strong negotiating position" with Tesco, who "clearly wanted" to go ahead with the project.

She said the council would continue to fight for the "best possible scheme for Streatham residents”.

Why is that LibDem bloke saying it is Labour's fault when it is quite obviously Tesco who are mucking about with this? If he really cared about the ice rink he would be attacking them, not anyone else.

Why were we not informed earlier that the continuity of service agreement was not signed? The leisure centre and ice rink are vital facilities for Streatham with a thriving community of users. I think the council should invest in refurbishment and repairs asap. They are both beautiful unique buildings and a real asset to Streatham.

What fool sold the land under the rink in the first place?
Fancy going into a business deal with Tesco’s and not covering your back, how stupid.

We all know what a ruthless bunch of money grabbers Tesco are and that they couldn’t care less about the local community. I guess it’s no surprise that the young people in Lambeth turn to drugs and gun/knife crime; they just get sold down the river.

Well done, great timing, just before the London Olympics, great example of our commitment to sports in London. I guess it’s the same old story as Richmond ice rink, and with Haringey closing next year too, this only leaves Lee Valley ice rink left in London.

RIP Streatham Redskins 1930-2009 almost 80 years of sporting history wiped out.

Bravo Lambeth Council and Tesco you really do deserve each other and what ever crooked deal you have done behind closed doors at the expense of South London Ice Hockey, Figure Skating and the health of the young people in Lambeth.

An absolute disgrace to think that Tesco and Lambeth could do this - it's so obvious a back hander is involved. I spent all my youth at the Ice Rink and it always kept me and my friends out of trouble. The Ice rink is still a major part of so many children and adults lives.

An absolute disgrace. Streatham Ice Rink has a long and great history. It is a very shortsighted decision to close this rink. I have visited this facility having watched both the Senior Redskins Ice Hockey Team and the junior teams over the years. Yet another sports venue handed over to a company where the bottom line outweighs the actual needs of the local community regarding sports activities. This whole episode stinks. In Nottingham the National Ice Centre was built prior to the old Lower Parliament Street rink was closed and ice sports continues to flourish. Shame on your local council for allowing this situation to develop.

The closure of this facility is contarary to the original statement. It will also cause the loss of a vital piece of essential infra structure for sport in the community. Also how many outlets do the greedy Tesco people actually require? Do not close the rink. Frank.

Great comments which do show how greatly the ice rink would be missed. Just to remind everyone that it has not shut down and its closure is by no means a done deal. The important thing is to put pressure on Tesco and the council to keep this amazing historic rink open at least until a replacement has been built.

I'm astounded at the content of this article. Have councils learnt nothing from what happened at Richmond? How can the land be sold without legally binding contracts saying they are responsible for keeping the existing facilities fit for purpose and open until the replacements are built?
Tescos have not suffered at all in the recession and in fact build costs can probably be reduced because of it.
