Streatham Hub project to go ahead

The Streatham Hub project is to go ahead, it has been announced.

Tesco yesterday formerly agreed with Lambeth Council to provide the same leisure, housing and supermarket development as originally promised, and hopes to deliver it by December 2012.

But a change to the delivery of the project means the entire site will be knocked down at the same time, meaning the Streatham Ice Arena will be levelled before a new rink is built.

The supermarket giant said it has not broken a promise of "continuity of ice provision" in the area, as a "high quality" temporary ice rink will be built in its place.

A Tesco spokesman said plans for the temporary ice rink are expected to be unveiled in the near future and could open as early as next year.

It is planned that the temporary rink, that will be big enough for ice hockey matches and figures skating, will be on Streatham Common opposite the site.

No temporary pool will be provided, but a temporary gym could also be built on the common, the Streatham Guardian understands.

The new building programme will mean the whole project - which includes some 250 new homes, a major supermarket, leisure centre, 438 space car park, swimming pool and ice rink by Streatham station -can be built two years quicker.

The proposals still need to be rubber-stamped by Lambeth Council's cabinet at its meeting on Monday, March 29.

A start date for construction has yet to be confirmed.

Eoin Dardis, Corporate Affairs Manager at Tesco, said: “This is great news for Streatham and will deliver what the area has been crying out for."

"We will, in the coming weeks, liaise closely with the Council to ensure the local community is fully aware of the detail of the revised scheme and the benefits that will now be delivered in Lambeth.”

He added: “The Streatham Hub is a complex multi-purpose project including retail and leisure uses.Spenhill, our specialist mixed-use development team, have been working extremely hard with Lambeth Council to come up with a revised scheme that is viable and delivers benefits for the local community.”

“We will continue to work with the council to deliver the temporary ice rink while the site is developed, which we appreciate is of great importance to local people.”

Councillor Lib Peck, who said:“I am very pleased that Tesco have given their backing to the scheme and, in particular, they have listened to the need for a quality ice rink while development takes place.

"Streatham needs investment and the work that we have done together with Tesco means that I am optimistic of a positive result at the Cabinet meeting."

The Streatham hub project - which was first given planning permission in 2003, has been racked by delays.

The latest setback came when the project fell victim to a collapse in the housing market caused by the recession. Profits from the residential development are financing the project.

The need for an urgent delivery of the scheme intensified when the delapidated Streatham Leisure Centre was forced to close in November for health and safety reasons.

I can't believe Labour are going to let Tesco knock down our Ice Rink. Container on the Common? You must be joking!!!! Save our Ice RINK!!!

"It is understood this will be in a container on Streatham Common opposite the site."

It should not be acceptable to have a "container" on the Common. Especially given no time limit is set for this interim period. This is a public green space, not a shipping yard.

I can't believe people are already moaning about this. This is a great success - Streatham will get a new leisure centre, ice rink and housing in a reasonable time-frame. Well done Councillor Peck for getting Tesco to stick to its commitments.

I am looking forward to seeing Tesco sticking to it's commitments, but am not holding my breath. Tesco have been looking for a way to knock down the ice rink without having to replace it and I wouldn't be surprised if the new ice rink never gets built. Tesco also owned the land a pub was on in Tolworth and bulldozed it even though it was listed. I don't trust Tesco as far as I would throw them.

Please let them be true to their word and not dash the hopes of all community who use the facility.

Sarf London, this is not a great success after all these years of wrangling and there is no guarantee that this hub scheme will materialise in the form promised.
I certainly don't trust Tesco either.
We are still without essential leisure facilities in Streatham and the temprary arrangements proposed are just not adequate or appropriate.
Streatham Common is greenland area and I do not want to see anything dumped or built on this beautiful space.
Why on earth are we congratulating Counsellor Peck?

Like most people I suspect this announcement is taken with some caution. Tesco's track record at keeping their word is not renowned in these developments. I do take this as a positive step though, the project could have been axed altogether which would have increased uncertainty around the future of all the leisure facilities in Streatham.
Provided the temporary rink is suitable and approved (Cardiffs is fantastic BTW) and the council have absolutely tied up the provision of a suitable and high quality replacement within the new development then this is great for the area and many adults and children like mine who travel miles to get there.

This is absolutely fantastic news for Streatham. This part of the high road is desperate for redevelopment and has been neglected and crumbling for many years. The fact that we must put up with a temporary ice rink to achieve such benefits and brand new facilities really does not matter. Streatham (and not just the ice rink users) needs this development.

Well done Tesco for conning Lambeth council with your false promises. You seem to have forgotten one minor point in all this. Many of the people using the ice rink are children and young people who, if the tempoarary ice rink does go ahead, will have to walk through what is left of Streatham Common to get to their skating sessions. So not only are you going to ruin an area of beauty for a number of years (the 2012 deadline is academic) but you'll be putting the safety of youngsters at risk as they cross the common after dark. In fact, adult skaters won't feel comfortable in a deserted common after dark either. Well done for creating yet another muggers' paradise in south London.

as for the comment on here about people moaning about this project happening, incase none of you realise, once the temporary ice rink is put up and the old one knocked down that will be the end of ice skating in streatham.. why?? because 1.the temporary ice rinks are more expensive then it will close because of lack of money. 2. once tesco have built their store and its ready to open they will say "sorry we have ran out of money and we can no longer build the new lesuire centre and ice rink" then we will end up another "RICHMOND" no ice rink.... another quick rich investment scheme that really does not care what the community wants!!!

Not only do Tesco get to demolish our ice rink, and leisure centre, with no guarantee that a permanent replacement will ever be built, they've also got Lambeth to agree to an increase in the size of their store from 40,000 sq ft to 60,000 sq ft. The suprermarket giant have played a blinder, they've held out for eight years, then at the last minute before the elections, when Labour are absolutely desperate to be able to claim a deal securing the Hub project, Tesco have got away with demanding everything they wanted and much more. There's a word for this but it's probably not repeatable.
