Streatham war memorials to receive makeover

Another memorial to the fallen in Streatham, which was built following a Guardian campaign.
A memorial dedicated to the lives of soldiers who died during the two world wars will be one of five iconic war monuments to be repaired following a £200,000 funding boost.
The cold cast bronze resin plaque in the Streatham Memorial Gardens on Streatham High Road will be cleaned and refurbished at the beginning of next year.
In 1944, it was almost destroyed by a V1 flying bomb, but by 1959 it was re-dedicated to include those killed in World War Two.
Another memorial at the Holy Trinity Church in Clapham Common will also be cleaned and loose stonework repaired following the investment by Lambeth Council.
Councillor Paul McGlone, cabinet member for finance, said: “Capital funding is very tight, but all councillors agreed the £200,000 funding had to be allocated to honour our responsibility to our war memorials in memory of those who have fallen.”
