Nine escape from overnight house fire in Streatham

The roof of a house has been destroyed after a severe fire broke out this morning in Streatham.

Twenty firefighters were called to a three-floor house in Bournevale Road, near Streatham High Road, when the blaze broke out at about 2.30am.

The fire was extinguished by 4am but crews remained on the scene past 8.30am to damp down the affected areas of the house.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman confirmed 100 per cent of the roof was damaged, with a further 80 per cent damage to the property's first floor.

He added: "Nine people left before our crews arrived. It was quite a severe fire in the roof.

"The cause of the fire remains under investigation and we don't know any more about it at this stage."
