Funding on way for Streatham library building repairs

Streatham library is set to receive £400,000 for repairs and refurbishment despite its future remaining unclear.

Lambeth Council has agreed the investment into the Tate building in Streatham High Road, but was still considering the possibility of moving the library to Gracefield Gardens.

Councillor Sally Prentice, cabinet member for culture, leisure and the Olympics, said no decisions have been taken and they would consult with residents.

Coun Prentice said: “We all know the existing building is not in a good condition and we are exploring a range of options for the future, which include essential health and safety work, roof replacement, refurbishment and modernisation of the existing building, as well as relocation to Gracefield Gardens.”

But Councillor Ashley Lumsden, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said people continued to be concerned about the proposal to move the library.

Cllr Lumsden said: “Although investment is desperately needed, we need to know the long term future of the library.”

A council spokesman said: “Tate Streatham Library will remain in council ownership and as such the council has an obligation to maintain the building.

“The council will be undertaking an options appraisal to determine the best location in Streatham to deliver a modern and efficient library service in the future.”
