Artists open studio doors for Lambeth Open

More than 100 artists opened the doors of their studios and workplaces at the weekend in a celebration of talent.

The annual Lambeth Open event, held over Saturday and Sunday, drew heavily on new pieces by Streatham and West Norwood painters.

It will include work by West Norwood’s Martin Grover, and pieces produced by Women of the Cloth, a Streatham trio who were brought together through their passion for textile art.

Jonathan Cowell, from West Norwood, said: “Lambeth Open is an excellent way to meet people in the community and show how you work. “To see an artist’s work in their working environment can be very revealing.”

Rachel Glittenberg, also from West Norwood, quit her job to take up art full-time in 2011 and now exhibits in galleries alongside artists such as Tracey Emin.

Ms Glittenberg said: "I love exhibiting my work and having people over to the studio. “It can be quite a solitary business being an artist in a studio working alone.”

David Taylor, a landscape painter taking part in Lambeth Open, said: “So often artists' finish work and send them direct to galleries to be sold – it’s so impersonal.

“When I sell a painting it’s a pleasure to see whose buying it.

“After all, it’s a piece of my soul I’m selling.”
