Problem Carshalton pub closed by Sutton Council

A problem pub has been closed after it was found to be a haven for illegal activity.

The welfare of children as young as six was put at risk by parents taking them to the Coach and Horses in Carshalton straight from school, drug taking and stolen goods sold on the premises, were raised at a meeting of Sutton Council’s licensing committee.

Officers said assaults were also common at the pub in the High Street, along with illegal lock-ins, and highly intoxicated customers being allowed to serve themselves behind the bar.

At the meeting on Monday the pubs owners, Punch Taverns, agreed to close the pub for six weeks from next Wednesday until it found new suitable tenants to run it.

Sutton Council also slapped a series of conditions on the future running of the pub.

Gary Grant, a lawyer representing the Metropolitan Police, told the hearing: “There has been a lack of appropriate management that has led to a complete lack of control of the operation.”

He said a pubgoer who had visited the establishment for 20 years said it “had gone completely to pot”, while police who visited it were met “with a uniquely hostile atmosphere”.

Mr Grant said even a designated premises supervisor, brought in as “a knight in shining armour” to improve the running of the pub, had been convicted of fraud within a month of his arrival.

Punch Taverns, who came to an agreement over the future of the pub in private meetings with the police before the hearing, agreed that the pub’s licence be revoked for six weeks.

A member of bar staff who had worked at the pub for 22 years wept as details of the closure were read out to the hearing.

A spokesman for Punch Taverns at the hearing said he was confident the pub would be turned around under new management.

Councillor Sue Stears, chairman of Sutton Council’s licensing committee, said: “It’s clear there have been some very serious problems at the Coach and Horses pub, including multiple breaches of its current licence.

“The licence holder, Punch Taverns, has had every opportunity to improve the situation, and I hope that the strict conditions we are imposing will send out the message that this lack of management will not be tolerated.”

I have been in here a few times and it's actually a nice pub and a good night out with great live music. Shame that a minority have spoiled it for everyone else.

It certainly used to be a reasonably nice pub- at least before 7 when we used to go in- but then we have been in pubs before where they were supposed to be rough and I've never had any trouble- nor hubby either

I have visited here on a number of occasions and it is a bloomin marvelous pub. management and decor may not be up to par, but customers, staff and music make up for that. as for children, they are allowed in wetherspoons from 9am till 9pm , and other local pubs allow children so why not this fine establishment? just another proper old pub gone down the swanny. Rest in peace coach x

If they drove a coach and horses through the rules that are in place to protect everyone and ensure they are safe and have a pleasant outing then they need to be kept in check; I can think of another one where trouble has churned up from time to time over several years.

The Sutton Life Centre has been looking for a role ever since it was built.

This article is biased; there are two sides to every story to us regulars it will be missed as meeting place for decent hardworking PROPER people.

PROPER people can meet up anywhere, eh?

PROPER as opposed to what? People made of plasticine?

Bulldoze it, make into flats. Pubs should be welcoming, community hubs - when they turn inwards and become dominated by a homogenous, low-life group, the writing is on the wall.

I'd be very surprised if it was demolished. If you look at photos of the High Street from over 100 years ago, you'll see that the pub usually features in there and still looks the same to this very day.

Although the headline leads you to believe otherwise if you read the article correctly the licence has been revoked for 6 weeks only, was still open yesterday when I drove past it.

Lovely old building, shame about some of the people who frequent it!Another pretty Victorian pub near the Sun has the same problem- really rough. However, the Sun in Mill Lane (now a trendy wine bar/restaurant has good food & great atmosphere. Carshalton's historical pub buildings are unique as is Carshalton village. The problem pubs need the right manager with imagination and forsight to deter low life.

Today is the day that it closes and you want to know whose fault it is ? Alex the landlord. I feel very sorry for his lovely son who did his best to keep it running. It WILL re-open in six weeks once the brewery have sorted it out. Don't bash when you do not know what you are talking about.

It's been sealed up today. I saw it being done.

"I hope not says. . .", - the place is being bashed because of undisputed reports in this paper. If the landlord feels that he is being mis-represented then perhaps you should direct him here or to the local Guardian for his side of things. In the meantime, the police and the brewery have agreed to shut the place down, so something dodgy must've been going on?

Agree with ''I hope not says'' 110%, nothing went on in this pub that does goes on in the majority of pubs in the area, the police know this, the closure of the pub should, and could have, been avoided. Some very good people are out of work due to absolute incompent management.

Pretty sure it is a listed building anyway. as one contributer said the Sun & the Hope have turned into well run decent pubs after being rough as old boots so hope springs eternal? There are another couple local that could do with a cull!!
