Comet sports review of 2012 - Kingston, part two

The Surrey Comet and Kingston Guardian take a month-by-month look back at the sports stories that mattered to the borough in 2012.

 

July: Surbiton’s James Tindall, Matt Daly and Rob Moore make the Team GB hockey squad for the London 2012 Games, but team-mate Richard Alexander, above, is controversially axed. Surbiton resident Ben Hawes is also in the squad.

August: AFC Wimbledon fan and former Kingston Grammar School student Sophie Hosking won lightweight women's double sculls gold at the London 2012 Olympics, Surbiton's Moe Sbihi won a bronze in the men's eight and judo player Karina Bryant also claims a first Olympic medal after 12 years as an Olympian.

September: Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harrier David Weir - now forever known as the Weirwolf – wins marathon gold at the London 2012 Paralympics to complete a haul of four gold medals.

October: Kingstonian hit the top of the Ryman Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Lewes. The game marked the return to the club of defender Tom Bird, pictured right, after a spell at Carshalton Athleic.

November: AFC Wimbledon lost 2-1 at bitter rivals MK Dons to exit the FA Cup at the second round stage. The game came weeks after Neal Ardley replaced Terry Brown as manager and ended a year where the only high point was securing League Two survival before the final day of the season.

Novmeber: Kingston 14-year-old Marcus Giles won the National Table Tennis Championship cadet boys’ singles title in Hatfield.

December: Judo star Karina Bryant is named Surrey’s sports personality of the year having ended her 12-year wait for an Olympic medal with a bronze at the London Games.
