England’s hopes of reaching the knock-out stages at the World League finals in Argentina suffered a blow after a heartbreaking defeat to Olympic champions Holland on Sunday.

Surbiton’s Georgie Twigg and an own goal had given their side a 2-1 lead in the second hald only for the Dutch to score twice in a minute in the closing stages of the game to snatch a 3-2 win in the second of England’s three Pool A matches.

Twigg was among the scorers as head coach Jason Lee’s team came from 2-0 down to beat South Korea 6-2 in the opening clash of the tournament 24 hours earlier.

Jenna Woolven ensured Twigg and international team mates Hollie Webb and Giselle Ansley were not missed too much on home soil, as she bagged a brace to help Surbiton to a 3-2 win over Sutton Coldfield at Sugden Road on Saturday.

Woolven and skipper Sarah Haycroft combined to give their team a 3-1 lead before Sutton hit back in the closing stages to nearly force a draw.

The result put Surbiton - who were also without Sandra Frankland, Abi Robinson, Harriet Tibble and the influential Vicky Bryant - third in the WHL Premier Division table going into the winter break.
