AFC Wimbledon goal machine has top tip for wannabes
He may be retired, but former Dons favourite Jon Main has some advice for wannabe strikers following in his footsteps.
Main, 32, hit 61 goals in 91 starts for AFC Wimbledon, and he was instrumental in guiding the side to the Football League in 2011.
However, he would never grace the top level as a knee injury curtailed his meteoric rise, and within two years, he had retired.
But it all started about 12 years ago when Main, pictured below, first pulled on his boots, and they were boots very different from the ones that scored all those goals.
“I started playing football when I was about 20, just for a regular Sunday pub side,” he said.
“I was quick, I knew that, but I would miss chance after chance.
“Then one day, this old boy grabbed me and said ‘Come here you, do me a favour, stop blasting the ball, just side-foot it in the bottom corner’ and ever since then I did that.”
He added: “That is all I ever aimed to do – just hit that side netting and most of the time it went in.
“I have probably blasted a shot about five times in my career since then. Always place it – that’s my advice.”
