Sutton United boss hails Bromley ahead of London derby clash

Streatham Guardian: Hit man: Sutton United will have to keep Bradley Goldberg quiet on Saturday, so says Paul Doswell Hit man: Sutton United will have to keep Bradley Goldberg quiet on Saturday, so says Paul Doswell

Sutton United boss Paul Doswell paid a glowing tribute to opponents Bromley ahead of their trip to Hayes Lane tomorrow.

Bromley are enjoying an impressive season and sit 11 points clear at the top of Skrill South going into the match.

Doswell believes his United has a good chance of beating Bromley, especially as they lost their last home game against 12th-placed Concord Rangers, but said he added he would be happy to see them promoted.

He said: “We played them at our place and were by far the better team. But they have done brilliantly – I would like them to go up.

“In terms of Saturday, they have two obvious threats in Bradley Goldberg and Pierre Joseph-Dubois – they have been fantastic.

“We did not give either of them a kick [when Sutton won 1-0 in October] and it will have to be the same again if we’re going to do well because the two boys are on the scoresheet almost every week.”

The Sutton boss cites Bromley’s decision to cut costs and focus on togetherness as a key reason for their success, and believes the men in charge deserve credit for making the change.

“Mark Goldberg (Bromley’s manager) has taken out the so-called superstars and made it much more about team ethic.

“I also really like the character of Rob Swaine - the centre-half and captain - and Neil Smith, the assistant, who I rate very highly. They have consistently beaten everyone.

“But I think we can do well, they were beaten in their last home game against Concord Rangers – you always have a good chance at our level.”

Doswell has seen many seasons fall apart for Bromley, and always in a similar fashion.

The Sutton manager said: “The first half of the season has been excellent for them – traditionally they always start well and then fade away badly and end up near the relegation zone.

“That has been their make-up for some time. I am not being nasty, but it’s quite well-known that they go hard in the first few months, but if it is not working they cut the budget massively and that’s why they have massive swings.”

He added: "By keeping costs down this season and focusing on teamwork, as well as keeping Bradley [Goldberg], Bromley look odds on this time round.

“I have nothing but respect for what they have achieved there,” said Doswell.
