Kent AC claim the Surrey League Cross-Country title in Richmond
Kent Athletics Club claimed the Surrey Men’s Cross Country League Division One title on Saturday as they finished second overall in the final meeting of the season in Richmond Park.
John Gilbert led the team home in the season’s final race – hosted by Ham-based Ranelagh – as he clocked 29 minutes 34 seconds to finish second behind winner Paskar Owor (29:17) of Belgrave Harriers.
Ranelagh, led home by Richard Gregory, ended a solid campaign with a fifth place finish, which saw them secure sixth place in the end of season table.
Ranelagh’s Gil Sanders clocked 32:09 to win the Surrey Ladies League Divison Two race in Croydon, as the club’s senior women finished second in the table.
Elsewhere, Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers’ Neil Wellard won the Surrey Men’s League Division Two U17 cross-country race in Croydon on Saturday.
The 16-year-old clocked 14 minutes 45 seconds to triumph, while clubmate Sam Shaw stopped the watch at 16:00 to finish the same race in fourth and claim the U13s win at Lloyd Park.
The pair’s successes were the only highlights on a miserable day for the club’s senior men for whom James Robertson (31:09) finished ninth, but could not prevent his team from finishing last to confirm their relegation.
Kingston’s women finished fifth in the Surrey Ladies League Division Two table after their team came eighth in the season’s final race at the same venue.
Walton Athletics Club did little better as their senior men’s squad were relegated from Division One, having ended the campaign at the foot of the table.
The Stompond Lane club’s senior women finished sixth in Division Two of the Surrey Ladies League, behind Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harriers in fifth and Elmbridge Road Runners in fourth.
Walton were led home by Anna Gilmore (35:45 in fifth) as they finished seventh in the final race meeting of the season in Croydon, with Kingston eighth and Elmbridge in a very creditable third.
