St Mary’s University’s Andrew Osagie described his upgrade to bronze medal following the qualification of his friend Marcin Lewandowski after the men’s 800m final at the World Indoor Athletics Championships on Saturday as a bitter sweet moment.

The 25-year-old finished fourth in one minute 47.10 seconds - one-hundredth of a second behind Lewandowski - but knew during the race the Polish hometown favourite committed a lane violation for stepping into the infield.

Luckily Osagie was later awarded the bronze medal, repeating the feat from two years ago in Istanbul, after Team GB successfully appealed against the result.

“I was in fifth place with less than 100m to go and I saw him step off the track and athletes instinct was that’s not allowed,” Osagie said.

“I know the rules because I got done at the national championships this year.

“It was the technical staff in my team that confirmed [the protest] and it was in the officials and judges hands to see it how I saw it. I didn’t make the decision, I just used my eyes.

“Tactically, I didn’t run that well in the final and apart from the medal, which was from the DQ of somebody else, I haven’t got a lot of positives to take away from the final.

“It’s very bitter sweet because I get on with Marcin [Lewandowski] very well on and off the track so it’s going to be a bit awkward from now.”

Ethiopia’s Mohammed Aman retained his title in 1:46.40 to add to the outdoor version after edging out Poland's Adam Kszczot.
