Parsons takes a big step towards a shot an the national QBL title
Kingston’s Danny Parsons took a big step towards challenging for the Queensbury national lightweight title last weekend, after beating rival Hassan Abdi on points.
Making the fourth successful defence of his regional crown on at the Epsom Downs Racecourse, Parsons produced another all-action thriller that had the arena on its feet for much of the contest, and the only surprise at the end of four pulsating rounds of boxing in which Parsons appeared to have dominated, was the fact that one of the judges at ringside had scored the contest a draw.
The victory extended the 19-year-old's run in the competition to six straight victories since joining the televised show back in 2012, and Parsons can now look ahead to his biggest challenge in July when he looks set to challenge for the National title at the iconic Alexandra Palace in London.
Parsons said: “It was a great fight but again I think I made it harder than it needed to be for me but the fans really enjoyed it.
“In the opening round I caught Abdi with a couple of big shots that looked to have hurt him, but from then on in I was just trying to knock him out with big shots which probably wasn’t the best plan.
“He was strong and was able to take pretty much everything I threw at him, but that could have been to do with him coming in heavy for the fight, but even so I was really surprised that he lasted as long as he did.
“After Saturdays fight I’m going to look at taking a few weeks off to recover and then I’m just waiting to hear when I’ll be out next, but I’ve been told it should be on July 12 at the Alexandra Palace in London, which would be an incredible place to box at."
Parsons latest win will be shown on British Eurosport in May.
