Leatherhead’s troubles continue to mount up
The world might be conspiring against Leatherhead CC right now, but skipper Matt Joblin is rising above it.
In one of the few games to survive the foul weather, Leatherhead went down by eight wickets at Sunbury on Saturday – marking a third consecutive Premier Division defeat.
Mike Nicol’s knock of 59 was the highlight of a bad day as Leatherhead collapsed to 121 all out in the 33rd over, leaving Sunbury to tick off the runs in just 18 overs.
The result does not tell the whole story however, as Joblin lost his wicketkeeper in the warm up, and now faces this weekend’s trip to Banstead missing four team regulars.
He said: “There were not many positives. It was one of those days when everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.
“Chris Lyons broke his finger in the warm-up. He’s one of our openers and the keeper, and although he came back from hospital to bat at 11, it was a blow.
“There were interruptions for rain and the wicket changed between innings, so we were always struggling.”
He added: “I am taking nothing away from Sunbury, they were excellent, especially with the likes of Adam London in the side.
“But we cannot use that as an excuse, there were areas where we were disappointing, we did not bowl as well as I know we can.
“But I believe when we are back to full strength, we will start to pick up points.
“We’re looking forward to Banstead this weekend, and we’re still in positive mood.”
Sunny Cott takes the gloves for his first team debut against Banstead, while Shaun Udall, Jonathan Tribe and Mark Farrant are all struggling with injuries.
In Division Two, Epsom and Worcester Park went head to head at Worcester’s Athletic Club ground.
After electing to take the ball, Park restricted Epsom to 186-7 off their 50 overs – Asim Zeb (45) top scored.
Park skipper Joe Hill (87) and Rob Hill (39) put on a 94-run partnership to steady a ship that was rocking at 35-3, and eventually saw them over an adjusted target of 160 in 37 overs.
Epsom go to Dulwich this weekend, while Park host Ashtead.
