Joblin’s Leatherhead are getting back to strength

Leatherhead CC skipper Matt Joblin is hailing the return of his injured stars as key to an improved second half of the season.

His side’s 38-run win over Sutton at Fetcham Grove on Saturday was their first in four Premier Division attempts.

It seemed unlikely at the switch after Leatherhead carded 139 all out, Aneesh Kapil top scoring on 39.

However, Joblin was confident of victory and with Jonny Tribe (4-18), pictured, and Adam Dyson (5-36) in control with the ball, Sutton crumbled to 101 all out.

Joblin said: “It was a tricky wicket and the outfield was very slow so I was confident, as long as we got into them early, that we could win.

“I’ve never lost faith in the side, but we have been incredibly unlucky with injury.

“We lost out opening bowler in Jonny, our international spinner and our keeper, so it was always going to be tough.

“But now they are coming and we’re showing teams what we are about.

“We’ve been there or thereabouts all season with having that edge our injured players would have brought.”

Meanwhile, in Division Two, Epsom are up to third in the table after a four-wicket win at Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian.

Godfrey Stevens took 5-40 as Trinity stumbled to 162-9, and the man top scored (47) in Epsom’s successful chase.

Skipper Danny Secchi said: “Godfrey is an excellent all-rounder.

“If he doesn’t do it with the ball he invariably does it with the bat, and last weekend he did it with both – he could have had more runs but he got a harsh LBW.”

He added: “We play second placed Chipstead this weekend, which would us into the promotion places, but the leagues is so tight, anyone in the top seven could still have a chance.”
