Surbiton trio Hollie Webb, Georgie Twigg and Giselle Ansley will go to next week’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow full of confidence after lifting the Investec London Cup at the weekend but clubmate Emma Batten will be thinking otherwise, writes Colin Pike.
England’s women – featuring Webb, Ansley and Twigg – beat South Africa 2-1 in Sunday’s final after a memorable competition that saw round-robin wins over Wales (8-0), South Africa (2-1) and Scotland (2-1) .
Wales, featuring Batten, conceded 23 goals as they finished the four nation tournament in fourth after a 3-2 third-place play-off defeat to Scotland at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre in Stratford on Sunday.
“We knew it would be tough, but we will take a lot of positives from the tournament,” said Batten, who has recently returned to action from knee surgery.
“Playing in front of a large crowd will be great preparation for the Commonwealth Games.”
Ansley, Twigg, Webb and Batten are all likely to meet up next Thursday when England face Wales in the opening pool match in Glasgow.
* Surbiton’s Michael Watt was in the Ireland team that held England to a 2-2 draw in the final of the men’s competition, before losing the shoot-out 4-2 with Watt missing his penalty.
Surbiton’s Alan Forsyth, Chris Grassick, William Marshall and Nicholas Parkes were in action for Scotland, who finished last.
