Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock says he won't risk playing Darren Ambrose on Saturday if the midfielder is not 100 per cent fit.
The free signing from Charlton has missed the last two week's of pre-season with a shoulder injury but should be fit to face Plymouth Argyle in the Championship curtain-raiser this weekend.
However, Warnock will not rush him back if he is not ready.
"Darren gives us that little bit of quality and we've missed him the last couple of weeks but he's not far away," he said.
"We wont rush him if there's a doubt though, we will leave him a week if we need to because long term we need him in the side."
Warnock also spoke positively of his other summer signings, strike partners Stern John and Freddie Sears.
"Freddie is always on the shoulder of defenders and is a constant threat," he said.
"Obviously Stern has come in and numbers wise we needed another striker.
"He's a couple of weeks away from full fitness but we might have to get his fitness back playing games."
