Weston's wonder strike leaves him buzzing for Bees

Brentford winger Myles Weston is hoping his 35-yard wonder strike against Gateshead on Tuesday is a sign of things to come.

The 21-year-old took his season’s tally to five with a brace as the Bees eased into the second round of the FA Cup with a 5-2 triumph over the Blue Square Premier strugglers.

Striker Charlie MacDonald also bagged two - after Ben Strevens had notched his first goal for the club - as boss Andy Scott’s men set up a home meeting with Walsall in the next round.

Weston, signed from Notts County in the summer, has played up front and out wide in starting line-up this season with Sam Wood dominating selection on the left hand side.

But he reckons his goal scoring exploits and livewire second-half display mid-week can edge him in front of his rival on a regular basis.

“That is the first goal like that I’ve ever scored and hopefully it is the first of many,” he said.

“The gaffer puts me on the edge of the box for set pieces and it has never really sat up for me to hit before, so I just hit it.

“I’ve got to keep doing what I’m good at - taking on people, getting crosses in and scoring goals - and hopefully I’ll keep my spot.

“I scored four goals last season and I’ve already scored five this season. I’m really happy and hopefully I can go on and score many more.”

Weston has made 13 starts for his new club since stepping up from League Two and manager Scott reminded him there is work to do if he is to be a regular feature on the wing.

“You’ve seen that when we get him the ball he is dangerous, but he’s got to learn how to get on the ball too,” added the Griffin Park chief.

“In the first half they sat very deep and our full backs had a lot of possession and time on the ball, but that highlights a lack of movement or positive movement from Myles.”

It was the first time the Bees have hit five goals at home since beating Saturday’s visitors Walsall 5-0 in February 2006, but it still wasn’t all smiles from Scott.

“I wasn’t happy really, with the whole game. We scored five goals and if people did things they are good at, we would probably have won more convincingly,” he said.

“But we let two poor goals in again. We have to defend the actual goal, not what people think will happen and that’s the problem at the moment.

“I thought Kevin O’Connor was outstanding in midfield. He kept the ball moving to our wide players, but we still didn’t have enough balls in the box and we let two goals in.

“I’m obviously happy we have gone through, but I’m not happy we have conceded twice again.”

Brentford’s next three games: Nov 21 Walsall (h), 24 Wycombe Wanderers (a), 29 Walsall (FAC, h).
