Croydon Harrier Lawrence Okoye has vowed to bounce back after coming sixth in the World Junior Athletics discus final on Saturday.
Having qualified fifth overall with a throw of 59.56m, the 18-year-old could only better that effort by 21cm in the final, throwing 59.77m, 1.23m off the bronze medal and 4.01m behind gold medallist Andrius Gudžius from Lithuania.
"I’m really upset,” he said.
“My last throw felt good but I smashed the cage.
"I didn’t connect with any of my throws which is appalling, you can’t come to a major championships and not connect.
"It’s been a great experience though, this is what I’m supposed to do, but unfortunately I didn’t achieve my goal.
"It’s made me hungrier and I’ll get these guys again and I’ll show them what I’m made of.”
Fellow Harrier Twinelle Hopeson ran the third leg in the heats of women's 100m relay team, helping them qualify for the final in second place.
She missed out on selection for the final though, where the GB team dropped the baton and failed to finish.
