Martyn Rooney felt good after qualifying comfortably for the 400m semi-finals at the European Championships this morning.
The Croydon Harrier ran 45.71 seconds to claim second in his heat having run hard for the first 250m and then easing up down the home straight.
"I thought if I go out and run well down the back straight then I can relax down the home straight," said the 23 year-old who is one of the favourites for a medal.
"I am in good position and I felt really good down the home straight.
"I looked across with 120m left and knew I only had to get top two so eased off."
Rooney's semi-final takes place tomorrow night with the final on Friday.
Fellow Harrier James Dasaolu runs in the heats of the 100m tonight.
