Landlords AFC Dons took on their tenants Kingstonian in their annual pre-season curtain-raiser and it was a credit to the game, played in the usual sporting manner, hardly a foul in the entire 90 minutes.
The first half was relatively even, as both sides had chances to break the deadlock, although Ks were without their holidaying striker Bobby Traynor.
But, after the break, the full-time Dons started to turn the screw as their likely first team line-up emerged from a number of substitutions.
The trouble for the Dons was that Ks keeper Rob Tolfrey was having a great time between the sticks, making a series of top-drawer saves to keep the Blue Square Premier side at bay.
Eventually, a valiant rearguard display by Ks cracked late on when the Dons hit two quick goals in deadly fashion.
Ks now turn their attentions to the visit to Kingsmeadow of a Fulham XI on Friday (July 30) in the annual Trevor Jones Memorial Trophy with a 7.45pm kick-off. After an impressive passing move on 10 minutes, Dons midfielder Rashid Yussuff found his striker Orlando Smith way out on the right flank but his drive across the face of the Ks goal went begging.
Then Ks skipper, Jon Boardman, already looking an excellent acquiition, stopped Reece Jones who was free on the edge of the Ks box. Ks' first real attack almost led to a goal. A cross from the right from Dean Hamlin found an unmarked Lee Hall close in and his header looked goalbound until keeper Jack Turner managed to push the ball over the bar.
From the Tom Bird corner, Tobi Jinadu headed over. On 15 minutes, a throughball from man-of-the-match Yussuff set winger Karl Douglin free in the Ks box but Tolfrey made a fine diving point-blank block.
Dean Lodge took off down the right and his deflected cross fell to Adam Thompson, who blasted over.
Dons defender Ryan Jackson took off down the right and his awkward low cross into the Ks box was picked out and smothered by an alert Tolfrey.
A Bird free-kick picked out Thompson on the far post and Turner did well to tip the header over.
A long, speculative, rising drive from Jones was seen over by Tolfrey.
On 36 minutes, a Lodge cross from the right fell to striker Carl Wilson-Denis but his first-time effort was straight at Turner on his line.
With five minutes to the break, a run from Yussuff saw him dance into the Ks box and again it took a brave point-blank block from Tolfrey to stop a certain goal.
There was still time for Delano Sam-Yorke to bore down on the Ks goal, he rounded the Ks backline at some pace, but again Tolfrey was out quickly to stop his progress. It was just three minutes into the new half and another fine measured build-up from the Dons found sub and ex-Ks man Christian Jolley but his effort was blocked.
Sam-Yorke intercepted a stray backpass, Tolfrey managed to push him out to the left, where he shot into the side-netting.
On 52 minutes, sub Jon Main took off down the left, Tolfrey darted out to narrow the angle, but the Dons striker went the wrong side of the far post.
On 56 minutes a short free-kick from Yussuff set up sub Ricky Wellard but his rocket rising drive from way out of the Ks box was tipped over by that man Tolfrey.
A penetrating Yussuff free-kick deep into the Ks box was headed out by Jinadu.
Then Main took off down the left again and set up Sam-Yorke close in but he sliced his drive wide.
On 68 minutes Dons sub Sam Hatton took off down the right sending in a cross to sub Lee Minshull but he skied over.
Two minutes later, the Dons were finally rewarded when a Yussuff through ball split the Ks backline allowing JON MAIN, darting into the box, to flick the ball over the diving Tolfrey.
Ks briefly rallied when Lodge set Max Hustwick free down the left.
Showing good possession the Ks central defender picked out Wilson-Denis on the far post but his effort rebounded off a defender.
On 76 minutes the Dons put the game to bed when a lovely cushioned header from sub Danny Kedwell found LEE MINSHULL in the Ks goalmouth and he slipped the ball past Tolfrey.
A Lodge chip meant for sub Stefan Martin saw Turner leave his box to clear.
