Britain's Jessica Ennis slipped to second place in the heptathlon after the third event, with Lithuania's Austra Skujyte powering into the lead in the Olympic Stadium.

Skujyte began the shot 139 points behind Ennis, who had made a stunning start to the competition in the morning with the fastest 100m hurdles ever run in a heptathlon, clocking 12.54 seconds to smash her personal best and also break the British record.

But Skujyte responded with her own world heptathlon best on Friday evening, producing a throw of 17.31m in the final round for a total of 3,126 points, 64 ahead of Ennis who managed a best of 14.28m.

That was considerably down on her personal best of 14.79m, but the 26-year-old from Sheffield still had one of her best events, the 200m, to come in front of another near 80,000-strong crowd in Stratford.

Team-mate Katarina Johnson-Thompson had been in third place after the 100m hurdles and a personal best of 1.89m in the high jump, but joked afterwards that would not last long due to her weak shot.

And the 19-year-old from Liverpool was proved correct, a best of 11.32m dropping her all the way to 20th place, 364 points behind Skujyte. Commonwealth champion Louise Hazel was 37th after a best of 12.81m.

Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska endured some anxious moments with two fouls before a throw of 15.05m with her last attempt was enough to move her up to fourth, with world champion Tatyana Chernova 13th, 290 points off the lead.
